Oxytocin is a hormone used in veterinary medicine primarily to induce labor in pregnant animals, stimulate milk letdown in nursing mothers, and manage postpartum conditions. It is often used in dogs, cats, and other animals under the guidance of a veterinarian.

Uses:

  • Induction of labor in pregnant animals
  • Stimulation of milk letdown in nursing mothers
  • Management of postpartum conditions such as uterine atony or retained placenta

Dosage Information:

  • For Dogs and Cats:
    • Induction of Labor: 0.2 to 0.5 units/kg body weight administered subcutaneously (SQ), intramuscularly (IM), or intravenously (IV). The dose can be repeated as needed every 30 minutes to 1 hour, but not to exceed three doses.
    • Milk Letdown: 0.2 to 0.5 units/kg body weight administered SQ or IM. The dose can be repeated every 30 minutes as needed.
    • Postpartum Management: 0.2 to 0.5 units/kg body weight administered SQ or IM. The dose can be repeated every 2 to 3 hours as needed.

Administration:

  • Administer only under the supervision of a veterinarian.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of the medication as per veterinary instructions.
  • Monitor the animal closely for any adverse reactions during and after administration.

Precautions:

  • Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to oxytocin.
  • Use with caution in animals with pre-existing conditions such as uterine torsion or obstruction.
  • Not for use in prolonged labor due to physical obstructions.
  • Avoid use in pregnant animals unless induction of labor is necessary and recommended by a veterinarian.

Side Effects:

  • Rare but may include uterine rupture, water intoxication, or allergic reactions.
  • Monitor for signs of distress, excessive bleeding, or unusual behavior and contact your veterinarian immediately if these occur.
